With all the cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and water ice - Philly isn’t exactlyyy seen as the health capital of the US. But that’s not to say there aren’t some incredible wellness initiatives happening in our city - and some truly amazing people behind them. Every year, Be Well Philly hosts a Health Hero Challenge, which highlights some of our local behind the scenes health superstars and enters them in a competition to win $10k for the charity of their choosing.

And the best part? We get to choose who wins.

We chatted with Adjua Fischer, Be Well Philly’s editor, for more details on the challenge and this year’s nominees.

Why was this challenge started?

“The Be Well Philly Health Hero Challenge was started as a way to recognize people in the Philadelphia region who are making big impacts on their communities when it comes to health.”

What are you most excited to see this year?

“I am really excited about this year’s 10 semifinalists, who are tackling health from so many different angles—ranging from helping people recover after violent trauma to dealing with the opioid epidemic to getting underinsured kids access to dental care to making cycling more accessible for women, and more—and seeing how our readers resonate with their stories and efforts. They are all so different, so I really think, regardless of what you are interested in the realm of health, one of this year’s semifinalists’ stories is bound to strike a chord with you.”

Same, Adjua. Every nominee is more impressive than the next, and we’re having a hard time choosing our fav.

Semifinal Voting ends Sept 18th - so click HERE to check out all the the nominees and vote for your pick today.
